The Handful Summary of Key Things You Should Know About The UN's 2014 New Report on the Climate Crisis
UN IPCC Working Group III Fifth Assessment Report: Mitigation of Climate Change 2014
Here are the five top things to know about the report’s recommendations:
1) The world must phase-out of fossil fuels and shift to clean energy investments. While global emissions are still growing, some modern and innovative economies have already beaten the trend - moving from dirty fossil fuels to renewable energies, proving it can be done
2) Substantial shifts in annual investment flows between 2010 and 2029 are required, i.e. cuts in fossil fuel investments of USD 30 billion per year, while more than doubling the investment in renewables. Delaying mitigation action now implies higher costs of action later, says the IPCC, while the co-benefits of actions taken now can outweigh their costs.
3) Urban areas are expected to triple by 2030. This is directly relevant to climate change as urban areas account for roughly 70% of global energy use and global energy-related CO2 emissions. Since much of this urban infrastructure will be built in the next 20 years, there is massive potential for smart infrastructure choices, combined with low energy codes in new buildings, retrofits of the existing housing stock and more widespread use of already existing technologies and efficiencies.
4) Forests, agriculture, and land use could become a net CO2 sink by the end of the century. They currently account for about quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, and could become a net CO2 sink due to successful afforestation efforts, reduced deforestation, and better agricultural practices.
5) Energy efficiency offers massive potential and multiple benefits, as well as the need for improved demand side management. Of course it's vital to produce energy in a more sustainable way, but saving energy in the first place and avoiding unnecessary waste is even better.
And the report includes a surprisingly hopeful note:
The IPCC is clear that we can still keep global warming below the danger-threshold of 2 degrees C compared to pre-industrial levels, if we make bold and quick decisions towards deeper and faster cuts in emissions. Even keeping warming to 1.5 degrees C, as many developing nations have been urging, is not ruled out.
At the UN summit in New York City this September, world leaders must commit to deeper cuts in emissions and faster shifts in energy finance from dirty to clean - in order to lay the groundwork for the strong global climate treaty that is due in Paris in 2015.

If we use the power of our convictions and our love and concern for Creation and our children’s future, we can play a pivotal role in generating the global will to shift to sustainable energy. By stewarding our land, making our facilities as efficient as possible, and teaching everyone that comes through our doors about the responsibility to respond to this crisis, we can reach a huge number of individuals world-wide – perhaps enough for a tipping point.

The Program: A One-on-One Method for Freeing Oneself of Biases and Learning to Think in a Dialectic Meta-Systemic Manner
In this blog and on this website we have many times forwarded the tremendous success benefits of learning how to become a dialectical meta-systemic thinker. We have also talked about the importance of de-constructing your personal biases and living in the present in a neutral aware state.
Now there is a one-on-one course that will help you do both of these things. It's called The Program and it is the brainchild of John Stewart (the author of Evolution's Arrow and The Evolutionary Manifesto,) and his partner Victoria Wilding.
This is the only course we know of that contains both elements of dialectical meta-systemic thinking as well as de-constructing your personal biases and living in the present in a neutral aware state. (At this time former Harvard and Frankfurt School Professor Otto Laske’s Interdevelopmental Institute is the only other place we know of teaching dialectical meta-systemic thinking. In fact, Otto is the key educator in this area.)
Recently a student completed The Program and wrote about the many powerful benefits that they experienced. Rather then trying to go over all of them here I will redirect you to the original article in the Integral Review.
If you have the opportunity to take the program, I strongly recommend that you do so. It will change your life in beneficial ways beyond anything that can be easily imagined. I can and will say this with no hesitation. This is because, learning dialectical meta-systemic thinking and coupling that with being in the present in a neutral, unbiased state has personally change my life for the good in a plethora of ways.
I also will not sugarcoat the difficulty of achieving the goals of The Program on a continual basis. But, if you have the right stuff and persist to achieve the two main skills of The Program, you will never regret any cost, time or effort involved in successfully completing it.
There are currently very few places where you can develop these very specialized, high level dialectical meta-systemic thinking and analysis skills. To our mutual peril they are grossly absent in most NGOs, major corporations or national intelligence agencies. If today's NGO's corporations or intelligence agencies had enough trained staff who could successfully execute the two above skills, they would have a tremendous effectiveness, market or survival advantage over any current challenge, competitor corporation or nation who did not...

Evolution's Arrow: Understanding the Critical Importance of the Progressive Directionality of Evolution
A major evolutionary transition is beginning to unfold on earth. Individuals are emerging who are choosing to dedicate their lives to consciously advancing the evolutionary process. They see that their lives are an important part of the great evolutionary process that has produced the universe and the life within it. They realise that they have a significant role to play in evolution. Redefining themselves within a wider evolutionary perspective is providing meaning and direction to their lives - they no longer see themselves as isolated, self-concerned individuals who live for a short time, then die irrelevantly in a meaningless universe. They know that if evolution is to continue to fulfill its potential, it now must be driven consciously, and it is their responsibility and destiny to contribute to this.
At the heart of this evolutionary awakening is the understanding that evolution is directional. Evolution is not an aimless and random process, it is headed somewhere. This is very important knowledge - once we understand the direction of evolution, we can identify where we are located along the evolutionary trajectory, discover what the next steps are, and see what they mean for us, as individuals and collectively.

What is an Evolutioneer? Why are They Critical to a Better Future at Every Level of Life?
An Evolutioneer is a new kind of 21st century pioneer and evolutionary engineer/designer. They are convinced of both the scientific validity of evolution and of the usefulness of evolution's core principles in life.
An Evolutioneer's daily actions and activism is guided by the principles of current, universe-scaled evolution science. Their activist mission is to use evolution science to:
a.) more effectively solve today's greatest challenges and,
b.) to intentionally co-create a better future for generations to come.

The Big Evolutionary Question and the 800 Pound Gorilla in the Room of the Integral and Evolutionary Movements
The process (and processes,) of evolution is science’s greatest discovery as well as the foundational common factual grounding that informs and conditions all of life. It is our single best current and most documented, "theory of everything."
In spite of these powerful objective facts, many of the branches of the current Integral Evolutionary movement unfortunately give short shrift to promoting the works of the leading evolutionary scientists or even educating much about the core principles of modern evolutionary science.
David Sloan Wilson in his book "Evolution for Everyone," warns that far too many people who believe in evolution (even scientists,) do not make the connection on just how important applying the modern scientific principles of evolution are to understanding our lives and tremendously improving the success of our daily lives in the most practical and principled ways.
While the current Integral Evolutionary movement extols detailed maps of evolutionary progression, it too is not demonstrating how practical or essential the core principles of evolutionary science are to informing and empowering the success of our daily actions or --- our ethical and moral decisions. Too much of what is being offered by the various branches of the Integral Evolutionary movement as what it takes to be an integral and informed evolutionary is overly spiritual in the form re-hashed Buddhism, old guru speak or mash ups of other eastern religions and/or mostly integral philosophy. (Lots of Ken Wilber maps and endless parsing of quadrant perspectives and then the nuances of that endless parsing.) There is really little or no hard evolutionary science or guidance on how to use evolution’s practical and time-tested core principles to enhance the success and moral decisions of our daily lives.
There currently is an over-emphasis on the spiritual and philosophical and an under emphasis on learning the hard evolutionary science and its relevance to managing daily life and developing a common set of ethical and evolution grounded guidelines. This backwards sequence and emphasis puts the proverbial "cart in front of the horse" and disproportionately over-emphasizes the role of the subjective spiritual and philosophical realities over and BEFORE the naturally antecedent and common ground of objective physical universe realities. (The physical universe really is antecedent to the biological and then the biological becomes antecedent to the cultural aspects of existence.)Paradoxically, it might just be that when we directly observe the universe objectively we might also be optimally informing and expanding the truthfulness and usefulness of both evolutionary philosophy and evolutionary spirituality. (Particularly within and through its universe-scaled evolution processes to discover its deepest operational success patterns.)This lack of appropriate grounding in evolutionary science has grossly unbalanced the educational functions of many of the current branches of the Integral Evolutionary movement. It is time to get this important issue out in the open, discuss it and hopefully re-balance and appropriately re-ground our movements.
