Moshe Cohen, Humor Artist of the Month, September 2005

Moshe Cohen was voted by the members and visitors of Universe Spirit as our September Humor Artist of the month.

Moshe Cohen’s performance might be best described as a mix of European and Contemporary Clown influenced by Japanese Butoh dance ( Ohno style). His Mr. YooWho steps onto stage enchanted by the universe surrounding him, living his fantasy of a Tati film. He seduces the audience with slights of humor and misplaced elegance. A mostly non verbal performer, the quality of his expressive humor sometimes conjures up the names of Roberto Benini, Woody Allen and occasionally, Chaplin. Perhaps the critics choice of words might best describe his performance: graceful, soulful. lightness, ludicrous. exhilarating, poetic, great clown.

His goal: to share light and laughter, and to heighten the audiences appreciation of the ridiculous. In his subterfuge, YooWho seeks to raise the humor to its highest form of transcendence. To this end he stages ludicrous events of comic persuasion: a flamenco number with oversized plastic bags, a sonata played with twirling plastic tubes, a wind-up penguin is asked to jump into a bucket of water. YooWho raises the flag of wizened absurdity to its highest levels.

"a man who creates laughter using the finest sense of humor and who, like the great clowns of history, converts silliness into philosophy."
El Mercantil Valenciano. Spain

Kosovo, Tokyo, Rio, Jerusalem, Barcelona, San Francisco, El Bosque, Katmandu, Brooklyn: Moshe Cohen spreads laughter around the globe. His humor reaches all generations. YooWho creates an intimate atmosphere which he shares generously with the audience. With true clown poetry he brings glory to the smallest of things.

Moshe's teaching revolves around the central theme of exploring and expressing one's sense of humor. The work is twofold: developing and humorizing a vocabulary of physical expression; and two, learning to play this world for, and in inter-relation with an audience. With performers, Moshe also focuses on the participant's physical theater and movement capacities, as well as the breadth and depth of their humoristic expression. He also . There is always an emphasis placed on the participants' capacity to connect with their sense of joy and wonder. There is also an emphasis placed on listening, with all your senses, and to being present in the moment. There is always a connection between humor and spirit.

Moshe travels to teach workshops in Europe, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Guatemala.
